An easy, cost-effective wine preserver… unless you’ve got a screw top

This is a simple pump and stopper type wine preserver that is inexpensive (Houdini at Amazon is only $10.80 right now!) and works well enough.

Of course this isn’t going to make your opened bottle magically last for a week but, about 85% of the time, it will keep it for 3-4 days without too much trouble.  Just remember to use the vacuum pump before you climb into bed for the night!  Even if you forget, simply getting in the habit of using these stoppers will help keep your wine for at least an extra day, even without pumping.

Why do they fail sometimes?  The issue is typically that the neck of the bottle is a little too large.  And when does this happen?  Usually with twist-off screw tops, actually.  If your bottle had a cork, the Houdini is probably going to work like a champ.  If it had a screw top, it may not make a tight seal.  You can always tell when you go to open it the next day and there isn’t that whooshing noise when you open it.  No whoosh = no vacuum, folks.

When you make your purchase you might as well pick up the 4 pack of extra stoppers, too – you’ll need ’em.

All in all it does its job most of the time and knowing its limitations certainly helps.  For about $11 it’s hard to beat!
